GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB)-- One of the busiest roads in north central Florida is about to go under construction.
The Florida Department of Transportation plans to extend turn lanes on Newberry Road in Gainesville and widen northern and southern I-75 ramps on Exit 387.
New traffic signals and additional street lights will be included.
The $2.4 million project will start next month.
“Our hope is by extending these turn lanes, it'll reduce the amount of congestion you see on there and keep traffic flowing a little bit better,” said Troy Roberts, FDOT Communications Specialist. “There’s record amounts of tourism in Florida year over year and part of that means there’s more traffic on the road, more congestion, so we’re always trying to be as proactive as we can.”
Construction is expected to be completed in Spring 2020.
