Family searching for answers in veteran's tragic death

(WCJB)- As North Central Florida celebrated Veterans Day, the family of one veteran had to mourn his violent death.

Alachua County Sheriff's deputies are still investigating the murder of Joseph “J.R.” Green, 62.

"Who did this to my brother?” Reginald Green, J.R.’s brother asked in an exclusive interview with TV20.

Early Saturday morning deputies found "J.R." lying on the ground with a gunshot wound near his home along the 900 block of SW 62nd Terrace in Gainesville.

"This took us by surprise. He don't bother people,” Reginald Green said.

J.R. was taken to the hospital but passed away.

Deputies are still searching for suspects.

J.R. served in the U.S. Army and had a strong faith.

"He used to always come to the church and watch us praise dance,” Isaiah Staten, J.R.’s nephew said.

His nieces and nephews say they are cherishing every moment they spent with their uncle.

J.R.'s family says they're in the process of planning a funeral with formal military recognition.

The reward for information is now $8,000 for any information that could lead to an arrest.
