Farm Fact: Earth Day

Sponsored - National Earth Day will be observed next week on April 22nd.

Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day in 1970 when he sponsored the first official Earth Day event. Modern conservation messages can be attributed to environmental conservation efforts started decades earlier by American farmers.

After the dust bowl hit the southern plains throughout the 1930's, farmers recognized some practices needed to change to prevent continued loss of topsoil. The USDA's 1934 yearbook of agriculture reported 100 million acres of cropland in the region lost all or most of its topsoil.

Today's farmers know the value of water and soil as irreplaceable assets for maintaining food security for themselves and the rest of the country.
