ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla.,( WCJB) ---- A fatal car accident was reported in Alachua County on US Highway 441. Traffic had to be rerouted for several hours.
Shortly after 5:30 pm Alachua County Fire Rescue and other crews responded to a report of a vehicle accident on southbound US-441 just south of Paynes Prairie.
Deputies arrived at the scene of a single car accident. According to officials, there were three people in the car during the accident. The back seat passenger was ejected from the vehicle, while one passenger had to be removed from the car by first responders.
"What we have was an SUV that was traveling northbound on 441. For reasons unknown at this time the driver lost control of the vehicle and veered over to the shoulder of the roadway and then overcorrected causing him to lose control of the vehicle and the vehicle overturned several times," stated Sgt. Calvin Long, Florida Highway Patrol.
At this time none of the passengers have been identified. Officials say that two of the passengers are in critical condition with serious injuries and one passenger is dead.
Florida Highway Patrol is conducting a preliminary homicide investigation into what caused the vehicle to lose control.
