GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - It is Florida's prescribed fire awareness week, which highlights the importance of prescribed burns.
Experts at the University of Florida say that prescribed burns are sometimes viewed negatively by the public, but without prescribed burns, Florida could face more serious wildfires like the recent wildfires in Australia.
Dr. Michael Andreu, a forestry professor at UF, says "That could be nothing further from the truth when we're using prescribed burning. In fact, we'll see recovery within days. Grasses will start to resprout, palmettos will start to resprout immediately."
In North-Central Florida, the Florida Forestry Service enacted multiple prescribed burns in Levy and Marion county over the last two weeks.
