Former Florida football player arrested in wife’s murder

POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WCJB)-- Former University of Florida safety Early “Tony” Joiner was arrested Saturday and charged with second-degree murder in the death of his wife in 2016.

It was Valentine’s Day 2016 when Heyzel Obando was found dead in her apartment, according to a report from News-Press.

Her death remained unsolved for years. A month after Obando’s death, Joiner was held at the Lee County Jail on a charge of violating probation. He was released on May 8, 2016.

Joiner played for the Gators from 2004 to 2007 under head coach Urban Meyer. His final season, Joiner was teammates with freshman tight end Aaron Hernandez, who would eventually go on to play for the New England Patriots. Hernandez was later convicted of murder and killed himself in prison in 2017.

At last check, he was being held in the Polk County Jail on the latest murder charge. However, he was expected to be transferred to the Lee County Jail.
