GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – A former Gator football player made a bad play after Alachua County deputies arrested him Wednesday.

Dre Massey, 23, met with a man who was trying to sell a $4,500 watch, deputies said.

Massey feigned interest in buying it and then referred the man to Fernando Apollon, 20, deputies said.

Apollon then stole the watch from the seller and fled, deputies said. Massey and Apollon dropped the watch in a ditch as deputies chased them down.

Both men were charged with a count of grand theft, deputies said.

Massey played for the University of Florida from 2016 to 2018.
