GILCHRIST CO., Fla. (WCJB) - UPDATE:
35-year- old John Hamilton has been on law enforcement's radar for some time now. But the clock expired and he was captured by Alachua County sheriff's deputies.
What started out as a traffic stop turned into an extensive manhunt in Jonesville.
"Deputies acting on a tip, attempted to stop Mr. John Hamilton who is a known wanted suspect," said Lt. Rhodenizer.
When approached by Alachua County sheriff's deputies 35- year-old John Hamilton got out of his vehicle and ran into the woods with a firearm just north of Newberry Road.
"We've had deputies from across the Alachua Country Sheriff's Office scouring the area trying to locate wherever he may be," said LT. Rhodenizer.
Hamilton has been wanted for crimes in Dixie, Gilchrist, and Alachua counties, as well as South Carolina.
Deputies say that most of Hamilton's crimes are property crimes, like theft and burglary, but that he does have at least one charge of armed trespassing.
"We've leveraged every asset we have available to include our swat team, our crowd management team, detectives, warrants investigators, folks from every assignment at the sheriff's office, the joint aviation unit and especially our k-9 unit, they've been out there working hard in the heat all afternoon," said LT. Rhodenizer.
After hours of searching according to the sheriff's office, it was K-9 Deacon who made the arrest.
The manhunt is over and all roads that were closed in the Jonesville area have been re-opened.
Hamilton has been taken into custody but is currently being treated at a local hospital for dog bites. He will be booked into the Alachua County jail as soon as possible.
According to Alachua County deputies, they are currently setting a perimeter north and west of Jonesville and north of Newberry Road.
They are searching for John Hamilton, 35, he has warrants from Alachua, Dixie, and Gilchrist Counties.
Deputies tried to conduct a traffic stop but Hamilton fled.
Hamilton is wanted on various counts including violation of probation, trespassing while armed, grand theft, and burglary.
A fugitive is on the run in Gilchrist county since June 27th and he could be armed.
Sheriff's deputies say 35-year-old, John Hamilton, is in the southeast part of the county.
Wednesday night, deputies began looking for him after they came into contact with him.
He's wanted in Alachua, Dixie, and Gilchrist counties, as well as South Carolina.
He's wanted on various counts including violation of probation, trespassing while armed, grand theft, and burglary.
Hamilton was last seen wearing khaki shorts, a redshirt, and a baseball cap.
