GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - The Gainesville Police Department, in an effort to clarify an apparent rumor, put out a notification via Twitter on Monday afternoon.

They said, "Today the Oaks Mall in Gainesville experience a false alarm while working on the fire alarm system. There are several false reports of shots fired at the mall on social media. Please disregard any such information as this did not occur."

TV20 reached out to the Brookfield Properties Retail Group, which is the majority owner and sole management company of the Oaks Mall, to clarify some details about when and how the alarm went off, and are waiting on a reply.
