GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Gainesville police's gun buyback event over the weekend didn't last as long as expected. In total, 136 guns were received and GPD even had to cut the event short when they ran out of money. GPD paid gun owners in either cash or an XBOX for their returned guns.
After the success of this one, GPD is already planning their next buyback. Captain Jorge Campos says, "We definitely plan on doing this in the future. We haven't announced one yet because we still have to conjure funding for it and how and where we are going to hold it."
Of the 136 guns, 3 were stolen, one of which was stolen from GPD's jurisdiction. GPD will return the gun to the owner once released by the state's attorney and return the other two to their jurisdictions.
