GAINESVILLE, Fla., (WCJB) -- The Gainesville Police Department is investigating a traffic crash on Newberry Road that killed a construction worker early Friday morning.
According to investigators, a vehicle was traveling eastbound on Newberry Road and as it passed NW 43rd Street, the vehicle hit some construction equipment and struck a construction worker before resting sideways on the driver's side.
The driver had to be extracted from the vehicle when responders arrived.
Both the driver and the construction worker, Yamil Hernandez, 45, were taken to UF Health Shands where Hernandez was later pronounced dead.
In a statement to TV20, GPD Chief Inspector Jorge Campos wanted to remind drivers to exercise caution while driving at night especially when construction workers are present.
