GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – A police department continues to mourn the loss of its officer who died 19 years ago.
February 12 marks the anniversary of the death of Gainesville Police Officer Scott Baird who died in 2001.
Baird died while he was trying to remove a batting cage out of the road near Gainesville High School.
A driver sped down the road and struck the cage which injured Baird and he later died from his injuries.
Baird was 23 years old and served with GPD for 2 years.
“Losing an officer at any point in their career is rough,” Chief Inspector Jorge Campos said. “We are a family. We all look out for one another. We all rely on one another for our lives depending on the circumstances that which we’re in whether it’s taking a batting cage out of the road or going in after an armed suspect or an active shooter. so we’re very close in that arena."
There will be a memorial service tonight at 7 p.m. at Northwest 16th Terrace near the location where Baird died.
The investigation remains open trying to find the people who put the batting cage in the road.
