GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) -- Gainesville Regional Utilities has contracted an independent company, Insituform Technologies, to replace about 2 miles of pipeline around Northwest 55th Street.
The project consists of lining older pipes with new plastic pipe within, all in an effort to extend the life of the sewers.
It also reduces the amount of storm water that gets into the wastewater system and helps recover capacity in the pipe and back at the plant.
The process is also less invasive than other forms of pipe maintenance.
The project will cost about $500,000.
Gainesville Regional Utilities says the savings in the long run are expected to be more than that since they're extending the life of the pipes currently in place.
