Gainesville and Lake City VA Hospitals host commemorative events for the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War
Today is the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam war and a local medical center held a commemorative event to honor the Vietnam veterans.
The Malcolm Randall veterans affairs medical center along with Vietnam Veterans of America hosted a Vietnam war commemoration event at their flagpole.
In 2017, President Trump signed the 'Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act' designating March 29th of each year as 'National Vietnam War Veterans Day.'
The event is an opportunity for Americans to recognize and thank Vietnam veterans for their service.
A veterans supporter wanted to pay her respects to her father-in-law and those who fought in the war.
"When you see a veteran, walk up and shake their hand," Veterans advocate Ronna Jackson said. "Thank them, let them know that you're grateful for their sacrifice."
Jackson shares how her father-in-law inspired her son to serve the U.S. Army.
"Our family knows first hand the cost of freedom and today if there's a Vietnam veteran out there, welcome home; it's long overdue," Jackson said.
After the event, Jackson wants to see more support for veterans.
"They fought for our country's freedom," Jackson said. "I think America needs to stand behind our word and take care of these Veterans like we promised them that we would."
The Vietnam veteran commemorative event was also held at the Lake City VA Medical Center.
