Gainesville man is connecting you to your next fishing trip

STEINHATCHEE, Fla., (WCJB) -- With so many opportunities to get outside here in North Central Florida, one Gainesville man is making it easier for people to find good fishing opportunities with a website called CharterHook.

It connects people with fishing boat captains.

On this Tech Tuesday, TV20's Olana Osborn brings aboard a fishing charter to show us how it works.

Fishing for leisure or fishing competitively, it's always a good idea to get on a boat with someone who knows what they're doing.

And for those wanting to fish without making an investment in fishing poles or a boat, CharterHook is the place to start.

“They won’t have to call the captains, or email them," said Andrew Smith, the creator of CharterHook, "They should be able to immediately find the captain that they need at the price that they are budgeted for.”

The aim is to bring anyone who's interested in going fishing to one website where they can find local charter boat captains.

“We ensure that the captains that you find our validated, and that they are up to date, nothing is expired," Smith said.

Once you book online, you meet your captain and get to casting lines -- with captains who are committed to getting you a fish.

“When we do it full-time we are out here a lot, also we provide also gear that is very expensive," said Kyle Skipper, the captain of Marker 1 Flats Charters, "Also we cover your fishing license so you don’t have to bring a license, we cover everything. So it allows you to not worry about where the fish are, what equipment you need, what’s biting, what you need to buy, that’s our job, we cover that, you just show up, don’t worry about anything and will handle it all for you."

if you're not an experienced angler, going with a captain is a great choice...and CharterHook makes things easier for the customer and the captain.

“As captains we are very busy, we need to be focused on our client, we need to be focused on fishing, and being able to perform," Skipper said.

But captains like Skipper were finding themselves taking phone calls and booking charters while on the water -- which was taking time away from their clients and the fish.

“It allows us to gather bookings without taking the phone calls,” he continued.

Andrew Smith says CharterHook allows captains to focus on getting the boat ready for the next client, so they don't have to worry about booking, marketing, or website design. CharterHook does it all.

But no matter what, Smith really just wants people to get outside.

“People should fish because they need to get outdoors on see what’s out there besides just what’s behind the screen, and take their families out,” Smith said, so they can make memories, one fish at a time.
