Gainesville physician and ex-wife sentenced in healthcare fraud case

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) -- A Gainesville physician and his ex-wife have been sentenced after being found guilty last year of healthcare fraud.

Dr. Erik Schabert was sentenced in federal court Monday to 3.5 years in prison, while his ex-wife, Mika Harris, was sentenced to 7.5 years.

They will both have to pay a restitution of nearly $4,500,000 to Blue Cross Health Insurance, as well as other insurance companies.

They were found guilty of health care fraud in October of last year based on fraudulent billing for skincare services at Reliant Family Practice in Gainesville.
