Gainesville school competing in robotics competition

Gainesville, Fla. (WCJB) -- P.K. Yonge’s Roaring Riptide Robotics Team unveiled its competitive robot to the community on Friday.

The group will be participating in the 2019 First Robotics Challenge with a deep space theme.

The theme was announced in January, giving the team at P.K. Yonge six weeks to come up with its robot.

“P.K. decided they wanted a First Robotics Team, First Robotics Competition team to get the school students involved in science, technology engineering and math as well as part of the First program,” said robotics coach Leigh Anne Brewster.

Because of the “deep space” theme, the robots created have to be able to be riven remotely, be able to launch items through openings, and place items.

The goal is to recreate the challenges encountered in space.
