Gainesville student places in prestigious science competition

(WCJB) -- A Gainesville high school student has placed in the prestigious Broadcom MASTERS Competition held in Washington, DC.

Janani Kumaran took home second place in the science division.

Her prize comes with $2500, an iPad, entry into a STEM summer program, and a planet that will be named after her.

Kumaran worked on an experiment for two years that would help reduce hydrilla, a plant species threatening Florida's wildlife.
