(WCJB)-- As Tropical Storm Dorian continues to inch closer to Florida, now is the time for everyone to make sure they are prepared.

The American Red Cross and ready.gov are advising people to have kits on hand in case a tropical system impacts their community making it difficult to get to essentials.

Emergency kits should including three gallons of water per person per day, 3 days of food, flashlights, a first-aid kit, and a battery-operated radio.

The American Red Cross also advises people to prepare their homes. If a storm approaches they say to cover windows and to store away any items that remain outside in case of high winds.

They say it's important to stay tuned to local news sources like radio and TV and to check government websites for evacuation notices. You can find your county's emergency management website here
