GAINESVILLE, Fla.(WCJB)-- Alachua County Public Schools employees are teaming up with Food 4 Kids to feed low-income children this holiday season.
School workers say many families rely on the free and reduced school meal program to feed their children.
When winter break comes around, many of these families struggle under the financial strain of not having those free meals available.
The food drive is trying ease that burden.
"So, the first year we started out, we fed 27 families just at one school, and then, as it's grown over time, now we're up to, you know, approaching 1,000," said Kelley Kostamo, Partnership Specialist at Alachua County Public Schools.
The food drive is accepting donations through December 12th for food and December 14th for money.
Donations can be dropped off mornings and afternoons at Terwilliger Elementary, Chiles Elementary, and Lincoln Middle School.
