Hometown Heroes: Hank Whittier

OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) -
Hank Whittier served his country as a Marine and now he is serving his community in a special way.

Whittier is the Executive Director of Veterans Helping Veterans USA a non-profit organization where Veterans in North-Central Florida can access all of the resources they need.

“When this organization was formed 20 years ago, someone came to me and asked me to head it up. It was an opportunity to serve Veterans again and make that difference I promised I would make if I had that chance,” said Whittier.

The staff said Whittier goes above and beyond in the service and care he provides to his fellow Veterans

“He does create magic, he is a motivator, he is an inspiration, and he has confidence in veterans who are willing to help themselves,” said Craig Crump a Client Manager at Veteran Helping Veterans.

“He cares, he worries about the vets. He knows what the vets are doing out there. He knows what the vets are suffering, that’s why built this institution,” said Rafael Mirabal at the non-profit organization.

Volunteers at Veterans Helping Veterans said this is a one of a kind organization for service members.

“Coming here is all the people that have served. The Vietnam Veterans, the people that used to get nothing now we can actually give them food and help them a little bit,” said Louis Hughes a volunteer at the organization.

They said Whittier is one of a kind person.

“His heart is really into the veterans and their families,” said Jinky Diaz a Loan Officer for Caliber Home Loans and Board Member at Veterans Helping Veterans. "I’m here every day and I see what happens in this building, truly he is one of the kindest person I’ve ever met.”

“Hank always knew a lot of people so he could just seem to get things done. He’s got a great personality, he loves to tell a joke and he loves to help people this is what kind of makes him tick,” said Gary Pascale the Office Manager for the non-profit veteran's organization.
