Lake City pilot dies in small plane crash
A Lake City man is dead after a small plane crashed on Tuesday morning, in a wooded area of North Carolina.
It happened around 10:30am, near the Columbus County Municipal Airport.
The pilot, 62 year old George Chartress III, died in the crash. Chartress and his passenger Richard Shawn were flying from Florida to Rhode Island.
State troopers say the men were stopping in Columbus County to refuel, but as they approached, the engine stalled and they crashed just hundreds of yards from the airport.
Sammy Jacobs and his friend were among the first to respond. They heard the crash when it happened, so they headed that way.
"We could hear the man hollering. And I told him, I said, you go in there and see if you can help him and I'll go out here and get some help. And that's, that's what we done, said Jacobs.
Jacobs runs a wrecker service and says helping people is what he lives for. He's glad he could help save at least one life.
The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA are investigating.
