GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) -- A new law in Florida is being challenged in federal court less than a month after being passed. A church in Gainesville has joined the lawsuit.
Officials at the Westminster presbyterian church confirmed to TV20 that they are part of the lawsuit challenging the new sanctuary city ban in Florida.
In a statement, Pastor Larry Green said in part, "Westminster's participation in the lawsuit is based upon our understanding that we are called to welcome the strangers in our midst...This law has created an environment of fear."
The lawsuit was filed yesterday by the southern poverty law center. It lists Florida governor Ron DeSantis and attorney general Ashley Moody as the two defendants.
It's important to note that only a portion of the law went into effect on July first. The ban will not be enforced until the start of October.
