GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB)-- A local cake maker's recent creation is soaring to international recognition.

On March 3rd, Gainesville Regional Airport celebrated the first flight of the American Airlines direct to Dallas service.

Maria Rizzo of Sugar Refined in Newberry baked a cake for the occasion.

The three-tiered work of art caught the attention of flight magazine Anna.Aero.

The publication awarded Rizzo's confection with its "Cake of the Week" award.

"I was just excited to be offered the opportunity to make the cake itself. It was a lot of fun designing it - a lot of fun working with Erin - just getting some ideas from her. Just being a part of the event was a lot of fun so the award was just sort of the icing on the cake," said Rizzo.

The cake incorporated many aspects of Gainesville's culture into its design.

One specific item that drew a lot of praise was Rizzo's re-creation of Gainesville Regional's mascot, Beamer the bomb-sniffing security dog.
