Local student honored for helping deputies recover stolen gun

Chamarion Lewis was awarded an Alachua County Sheriff's office badge in front of teachers and classmates at Kimball Wiles Elementary School.

Lewis was walking with friends when he found a loaded handgun on the side of the road near Tower Village.

Lewis immediately reported the gun to his teacher and school resource officer.

Deputy P.J Mauldin says this act shows the difference a good relationship between law enforcement and students can make.

The stolen gun has been processed in the Alachua County Sheriff's forensics lab where they will determine if it is connected to any recent crimes.
