GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB)- Police say a man is dead after a stabbing in southwest Gainesville.
Around 3:30 Tuesday afternoon, police say 23-year old Timothy Cooper stabbed Leonard Roddy in an apartment at Southern Pine Apartments. Roddy, a man in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gainesville Police say Cooper claimed that he confronted Roddy about something he said to him, then pulled a knife.
Quentin Mobley, a resident of Southern Pines Apartments walked out to see yellow caution tape.
"I just wish this wouldn't have happened,” Mobley said.
Moment later, he found out his neighbor Leonard Roddy, 61, had been stabbed and killed.
"He's real sweet. He's a special person. It's just messed up how it happened."
Cooper was taken into custody by police.
Residents say Roddy had dementia and was picked on at times.
"They figured they could just do anything to them cause of the guy he was. Just running over him really. Certain people, we used to get mad at other people cause the things they were doing to him."
Although Mobley says Roddy didn't have family in town, they just want to remember him as the guy that could make anyone smile.
"He's resting in heaven, we don't say rest in peace. He's resting in heaven and we love him.,” Mobley said.
Timothy Cooper has been charged with first degree murder.
He is at the Alachua County Jail on no bond.
Police say the suspect is in police custody and is cooperating.
