Marion County deputies investigating human remains found in backyard

Marion County deputies are investigating a tip regarding the possibility of human remains being buried in the backyard of a home in the Highlands.

The Highlands is a region of Marion County located between Dunnellon and Marion Oaks.

According to Marion County Sheriff's Office, on Saturday, February 1st, 2020, deputies got a tip regarding the possibility of human remains being buried in a backyard.

According to the deputy report, when deputies arrived at the home, they found a woman shaking and crying telling them there was a body buried beneath a mound of dirt.

The man with her denied that there was a body saying he dug up the ground three weeks ago for a new burn pit.

The man gave duties permission to dig up the mound and after a short period of time, the deputies found what appeared to be human remains.

"Please reach out to the sheriff's office, please contact Detective Simpson of the Marion County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit or contact Crime Stoppers to report anonymously, all information is incredibly valuable to us right now,” MCSO Public Information Officer Cecelia Koon said.

Officials are not releasing the man's identity or cause of death just yet. No arrests have been made.
