Music and art festival raises funds for survivors of abuse organization

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB)- Organizers of an art and music festival are giving back to the community by raisinig money for survivors of abuse

The Imagine-Twogether Festival is going on in Depot Park all weekend.

There's a silent auction and more than 35 bands performing at the festival.

"One of the things that I spent all my life hearing from people, is that you'll never heal. One of the things that I found out through my own experience is that that's not true,” Autumn Irwin, a survivor of abuse, said.

Sometimes a whole lot of pain can go away with a little bit of love.

"I actually have a service dog that goes to work with me every day,” Irwin said.

Irwin started K-9 Cares, an organization helping survivors like her by teaching them how to train their own licensed emotional support animal.

"And I began with my own path of life, finding out that the connection between K9 and human has a major healing property,"

Hearing her story, Mahadev, a local musician, decided to help by planning an arts and music festival named "Imagine Twogether."

"There is a heavy issue with a lot of friends of mine personally that haven't come up and talked about and opened up about that they have been abused in their past,” Mahadev said.

The festival is a way of educating the community while helping make a dream come true.

"My vision is for every foster home, group home, sexual assault center, survivors of abuse, to have the opportunity to heal through the bond of an animal,” Irwin said.
