GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - The Agronomy Department at UF has hired a new chair. After nine years of teaching and doing research, Diane Rowland will now lead what she believes to be the most unique Agronomy Department in the US.

Rowland will now be in charge of 32 faculty, staff members and students. She wants to focus on education since the Agronomy Department plays such a vital role in feeding the world.

Rowland says right now, 50% of the agricultural industry is retiring, so Rowland wants UF students to be prepared for those openings after graduation.

“We as academics tend to train more academics and were finding more and more that students want industry careers or other options and so we need to get more creative, we need to get more educated ourselves in how to prepare them the best for a wide diversity of careers", says Rowland.

Rowland feels that over the next couple of years, the quality of the Agronomy Department will help make Florida a Top 5 Public University.
