New grant for high visibility enforcement and traffic laws

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB)-- The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office has been issued a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation for a new program designed to educate pedestrians, motorists, and bicyclists.

The primary goals of the initiative are to increase awareness and educate everyone about the traffic laws that will protect them.

"It's more 'Hey you don't have a light on your bicycle? Here's a light for your bicycle. We've got some of those that were donated and given to us to handout,'" emphasized Lieutenant Jayson Levy.

The program is not ticket-based however there may be tickets issued as a last resort for those that do not comply with the traffic laws.

Funding for the program will be available through May 17, 2019.
