New technology for prostate cancer treatment

Doctors say one in five men are affected by prostate cancer.

With new, non-invasive technology a gainesville urologist says hes been able to treat more than one hundred patients with the disease.

The new technology stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound.

The treatment method allows doctors to treat a specific area of the prostate without radiation or surgery.

"A patient that has HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) can be actually cured of the disease and they have the options that if the disease comes back he can go back to one of the more traditional treatments such as radiation," says local Urologist, Dr. Perinchery Narayan.

The treatment usually lasts an hour and requires just one visit to the office, plus a short recovery period.

Dr. Narayan has travled to different states to demonstrate this new technology.

Narayan says the treatment has been successful in most cases, but the technology needs to be used for two more years in the United States before official data is released.
