The Newberry City Commission lost and gained a commissioner at Monday night's meeting.

Commissioner Matt Hersom resigned at the end of meeting Monday evening.

He and his family are moving to South Carolina to take a job with Clemson University.

Hersom served as commissioner for 18 months.

In a resignation speech, Hersom said while his term was short, he was happy to have served.

"There are great things in the future for the City of Newberry and I am happy to have played a small role, maybe the smallest role, in Newberry's history, and thank you for the opportunity to serve this great community," said Hersom.

Rocky McKinley was immediately sworn in to fill the rest of Hersom's term in office, which ends in April.
