NEWBERRY, Fla. (WCJB)-- A middle school student in Alachua County who won first place in a national writing competition.

Sixth-grader Oscar Conklin from Oak View Middle school in Newberry won the award in the Letters about Literature competition.

The competition required students to read a book or other written work, then write a letter to the author describing how their work inspired them.

“I really like to read and to write because it's just a way to get your ideas out and read something that can inform you about something or it can be just a fun story that you can journey to another place,” Conklin said.

Conklin is among nine students from Oak View who were selected as state-level finalists in the competition and all are eligible for the national competition.
