OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) - One of the premier destinations for drag racing fanatics in the entire world is situated right here in North-Central Florida."
Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing in Ocala is home to the Drag Racing Hall of Fame and legendary drag racer Don Garlits.
Known as “Big Daddy”, since he would always bring his wife and two daughters to his races, Garlits is considered the patriarch of top fuel drag racing. He holds 17 world championship titles and also owns multiple speed records. He is also the first to go over 170, the first to go over 200, the first to go over 250, the first to go over 270.
The museum consists of two main buildings, the drag racing museum and the antique car museum, but its not just the cars that make this museum so special.
Chuck Keppel, Garlits nephew, says “there are memorabilia with these cars, things that are only associated with these cars next to them. We have pieces of drag strips throughout the museum from drag strips that are no longer around that date back to the early days of drag racing. So when you come here, especially in the drag racing building, its not just cars, its all the memorabilia, its all the photos that are associated with drag racing.“
The antique car museum features approximately 50 cars that date all way back to the early 20th century.
The museum is open daily from 9-5 except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas.
