Troopers said the train was heading north on U.S. Highway 301 in Hawthorne when it collided with a dump truck going east on SE 111th Avenue. The driver, 59 year old Terry Owens of Palatka, was killed.

The Alachua County Sheriff's Office got the call at around 10 am on Wednesday. The Florida Highway Patrol got on scene shortly after.

Tomesha Howard, of Hawthorne, was at home when she heard a loud boom. "I live about 3 miles away," she said. "I heard a big slam, you could tell that it was a train cause of all the steel but I wasn't sure what it ran into until I got down here, and it was a dump truck."

State troopers said Owens was driving his truck on a private dirt road near of SE 111th Avenue.

The train hit the right side of the truck cab, killing Owens.

Trooper Cabral said, "We're taking photo documentations, doing statements for the conductors engineers, and we're trying to piece together the puzzle to see why the truck and train collided together."

State troopers are leading the investigation.
