Parents outraged at unsafe bus stop, MCSO heeds the call

MARION COUNTY, Fla. (WCJB)-- Many Marion County parents are breathing a sigh of relief, knowing that their children's bus stop is much safer than it was just the day before.

Several Marion County parents pick up their children on Blichton Road when the school bus drops them off for the day but with such heavy traffic flow in the area, it's raised some serious concerns with parents on safety.

Emily Wheat posted a video to social media this week, showing cars not stopping for bus signals, asking her community to help her find a solution.

She said she’s tired of her children's lives being put at risk when they try to get off the bus.

"It's dangerous for our kids, it's getting out of hand for our kids,” Wheat said.

Her Facebook video gained attention from other concerned citizens and even the sheriff's office.

"The sheriff has formed his guys into a task force, teaming up with Ocala Police and some of them will be assigned to nothing but enforcing school bus traffic laws,” said MCSO Public Information Director, Sgt. Paul Bloom.

On Blichton Road, there is no concrete or grass median dividing the lanes so cars on both sides must stop.

TV20 joined Wheat at the bus stop Wednesday to get a first-hand look, and we did find a few drivers breaking the law, but thanks to sheriff's deputies on scene, justice was served.

"Major thanks to them for that,” Wheat said.
