The Partnership for Strong Families in Gainesville is hosting its Wish Upon a Star gift drive, and they're looking for volunteers to help sort and wrap the gifts in time for the holidays.
Wish Upon a Star is the Partnership for Strong Families' largest donation drive of the year.
It serves kids of all ages in 13 North Central Florida counties, providing them with gifts for the holidays.
“This program serves children who’ve experienced abuse or neglect. Over half of those 1300 children won’t be at home for the holidays this year, they’ll be in the care of a relative, non-relative or foster parent," said Patty Carroll from the Partnership for Strong Families. "So it’s a really special thing for the child to receive these gifts, but it’s also special for the caregiver so that we can help them provide those Christmas memories for the children too.”
Each child made a wish list of gifts they'd like to get, and with the community's help, the partnership for strong families is working to fulfill their wishes.
For many of those children, the gifts provided by wish upon a star are the only presents that they'll receive this year.
“We always hear from the caregivers and from our children sometimes what an impact these gifts actually do have and how much it means to them...that they’re going to have something really special that they’ve been hoping for and wishing for,” said Carroll.
