Starting August 1, Gainesville residents will need to keep their plastic bags or a buy reusable one, because plastic bags will no longer be allowed.
Wednesday night, Gainesville City Commission unanimously voted to do away with single-use plastic bags and polystyrene containers. The ordinance bans plastic grocery store bags and styrofoam take-out containers used by restaurants.
There are a few exceptions like bags for dog waste, newspapers, and styrofoam plates for meat products in grocery stores.
