GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) -
Starting Monday, December 9th, Gainesville candidates can start qualifying for open city commissioner seats.

If you're interested in qualifying as a candidate, you have until this Friday, December 13th at 12:00 p.m. to register at Gainesville City Hall.

"In the upcoming election, there are three candidate seats open; Districts 2 and Districts 3 and there is an at-large seat," explained Marie Kessler, Gainesville's city clerk. "To become a candidate in Districts 2 or 3, residents have to be residents of those districts. Anyone who lives in the city of Gainesville may run for the at-large seat."

This week's qualifying dates are earlier than past years as a result of a 2018 vote.

This year's election will now coincide with the 2020 presidential primary.

According to VoterFocus.com, 6 people have already filed to run but still need to qualify.
