OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) – People in North Central Florida dusted off antique carriages and hooked up their teams for the 2020 Grand Oaks Classic and Derby.
It features many of the traditional horse disciplines like dressage and cross country except its all done while pulling a carriage.
The all-weekend event showcased pleasure riding, a type of horse sport that's a blast from the past.
"Pleasure shows now are kind of a window to the past using carriages that were designed and developed in some cases 100-200 years ago, so the vast majority of the carriages are old antique carriages," Tomm Warriner, the vice president of the Grand Oaks Resort.
More than 90 participants attended the derby including world champions as young as 15 years old.
TV20 was told at least one of these teams will soon be traveling to England for a competition at Windsor castle in front of the queen.
Organizers say the sport's prevalence is growing slowly and they're hoping to include as much of the younger generation as they can.
