GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) — Nearly three thousand lives were lost 18 years ago and there were many events commemorating that tragic day around North Central Florida.
Hundreds climbed the 1,980 steps to honor the first responders who sacrificed their lives during the September 11th attacks.
People in Gainesville took part in the third annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Hundreds climbed the 1,980 steps to honor the first responders who sacrificed their lives during the September 11th attacks.
The event was hosted by the UF Collegiate Veterans Society, Student Government and The Grit Foundation.
Mason Brooke, the Student Government Cabinet Director for Veteran's Affairs said "I hope we never forget what happened because this is something that has defined American pride and American Culture and it's very important that we don't forget that. And that we don't let it get lost in history, so it's important to have these events."
In addition to hosting the climb, the Grit Foundation also collected donations for local first responders.
