Student struck by car after getting off bus in Starke
A man was arrested in Starke Tuesday after Bradford County Sheriff’s deputies said he hit a student with his car.
In a Facebook post, Bradford County Sheriff Gordon Smith said Carl James Jr., 40, hit a student as she was getting off a school bus near 106 West Brownlee Street.
"Well, it frightens us, to begin with. I know yesterday when I first received the news that we had a student that had been hit by a vehicle, it really puts you into shock immediately," Bradford County Schools Superindentent David Harris said.
Sheriff Smith said the student’s injuries were minor and she was taken to Shands of Starke.
Witnesses in the area and in-bus video showed the bus was at a complete stop with all lights and signs displaying.
"If you pass a bus with its active lights on, which is the stop signs extended and the red lights flashing, so it is actually a criminal court date that you have to go in front of a judge and answer to why you passed the school bus," Bradford County Deputy Jacob Swaggerty said.
James was charged with reckless driving and was booked at the Bradford County Jail. He posted his $500 bond 4 hours later.
