Tech Tuesday: Testing Essential Oils for Purity

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB)- Essential oils bring the flavor, scents, or health benefits of a plant into products. According to Essential Validation Services, EVS, CEO Adam Christensen, their findings indicate many products with essential oils in the market are not legitimate and there are no regulations. Providers and consumers cannot determine by a label whether the product they are getting is fake.

EVS is based out of the Innovation Hub at the University of Florida and utilizes a mass spec lab on campus to test oils for their purity. They want to bring transparency to the industry and identify suppliers that can be trusted. Companies with products that contain essential oils send EVS up to 100 oils for testing a time. The lab gives the products a seal of approval if they pass the testing so consumers can make smarter choices.
