NEW DETAILS: GPD investigating fatal shooting, shooter says it was self defense

The Gainesville Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that happened at an apartment complex on the southwest side of Gainesville on the morning of November 20th.

According to a press release from GPD emailed to WCJB, they responded to the Treebecka Park Apartments on SW 20th Avenue when a woman called them to report that she had just shot her ex-boyfriend in self-defense.

When Police arrived, they found Daniel Cain Smith, 42, laying on the floor of the apartment, unconscious, with apparent gunshot wounds.

They state in the release that further investigation seemed to back up the woman's claim of self defense, as she had apparently suffered multiple injuries. They note their investigation into the shooting continues.

A representative with Contemporary Management Concepts, which manages the complex, says they are cooperating with authorizes during this investigation, but that they have no further comment on the issue.
