GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB)-- “Service Above Self” was the motto residents lived by during a fundraiser on Giving Tuesday.

The Rotary Club of Gainesville hosted a live and silent auction at the Wyndham Garden Hotel located at 2900 SW 13th St. on Tuesday.

The funds will go towards an organization called Sustainable Cambodia.

The organization teaches families about water filtration and agriculture to help alleviate poverty and lack of health care.

“This is what gives meaning to life,” said Richard Allen, the chair for the International Sustainable Cambodia committee chair. “At the end of our lives, we don't look back and go ‘Gosh, look at all the money I made or look at all the buildings I built.' We look and go, ‘How many people did I help' and that's really what this is about.”

Allen has been a part of the organization's fundraising efforts for 16 years and said it has helped more than 20,000 families live better lives.

The auction raised $21,000.
