The plastic bag ban is one step closer to being enacted

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - City commissioners took a crucial step forward tonight to ban single-use plastic bags and polystyrene containers that restaurants often use.

During public comment at Thursday's meeting, some residents claimed the city commission is legally prohibited from enacting a ban. Mayor Lauren Poe calls this "a public health issue."

The proposal needs two public hearings and a second reading before it is enacted. The target date for it to become effective is August first.
