MARION COUNTY, Fla. (WCJB) -- UPDATE 11/8: The Belleview community is in mourning Friday after a grandfather and his two granddaughters were killed in a car accident, caused by an impaired driver.
It happened at the intersection of County Road 484 and Southeast 36th avenue, where 48-year-old Stephen Lynn was driving his ford 350 pick up when he crashed into a Suzuki Vitara driven by grandfather Emilio Nunez and his two granddaughters, Nevaeh and Katalaya.
"Had he not been driving impaired, he had that choice to drive without being impaired and he chose not to do that so it's unfortunate, it's tragic and it's really kind of senseless,” said Florida Highway Patrol Public Affairs Officer Lt. Patrick Riordan.
Nevaeh and Katalaya both attended Belleview-Santos Elementary School.
It was a quiet day at the elementary school on Friday. The school district had several counselors on campus at the ready for anyone who wanted to talk about the crash.
"It's okay to be sad, it's okay to be angry, that we're here to support them and not just for the children but our facility as well,” said the Principal of Belleview-Santos Elementary School Kimberly White.
The school had counselors on campus all day ready to talk with students and faculty about the accident.
White said around 30 students have asked to speak with a counselor.
"Taking time to honor the children's memories and allow for each person to process their grief and know that they are cared for and they have someone that they can take to,” White said.
Stephen Lynn was arrested on three counts of DUI manslaughter, DUI property damage and driving with a suspended license.
