GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB)-- On Tuesday, UF Health welcomed a new rehab hospital on Archer Road to help patients transition back into their daily lifestyle after an injury.

UF Health partnered with a Healthcare company called Select Medical to renovate the facility.

The building includes 50 beds, a kitchen, a gymnasium, and outdoor walkways to help patients who are recovering from a stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, and other conditions.

“How we help them resume life requires one-on-one therapy,” UF Health Shands CEO Edward Jimenez said. “It requires things that for you and I are intuitive to daily life.”

The facility will also provide rooms to ensure patients will have more privacy during recovery.

“It’s possible that the patient still needs their families involvement,” Jimenez said. “To teach families and involve families in the rehab care is a little cramped and complicated when you have a roommate. Now they’re not going to have roommates and this is going to create a wonderful, wonderful experience.”

In the meantime, UF Health’s rehab hospital on 39th Avenue will transition operations to the new facility.

Select Medical will operate the facility and administrators expect to begin admitting patients by Feb. 19.
