JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (WCJB) -- It was a terrifying ordeal for students in University of Florida's Honors Program traveling in South Africa.

South African police report 19 students and two faculty members were at a preschool northeast of Johannesburg when a group of armed men stopped them.

UF spokesman Steve Orlando says they were herded into a classroom with young children in it.

Police say they were robbed of valuables including laptops, cellphones, cameras, passports, plane tickets, and money.

The thieves fired their guns as they escaped, wounding one local, but no UF students were hurt.

Orlando says three students are in the process of returning home.
