UF researcher speaks on Coronavirus

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) -- Many people are concerned about the possible spread of coronavirus in the United States.

Florida is a vacation destination for people from around the world, and Gainesville is no exception.

University of Florida Researcher John Lednicky said it is very easy for someone with the virus to hop on a plane and come here. And, if people are really worried, they should wash their hands often.

He also said people that want to take extreme caution can wear gloves, a mask, and goggles.

"The new virus causes a respiratory infection initially and the patients get a headache, they sneeze, they cough, they get a sore throat and it then can progress to pneumonia," he said.

I was told University of Florida Health Shands Hospital is prepared and equipped in case the virus comes to Gainesville.

Lednicky said people should not panic because many symptoms can be confused with the flu or allergies.
